M 70 PRO X AND M 90 PRO X – DIFFERENCES AND COMMON FEATURES

We launched the M 70 PRO X and the M 90 PRO X – specifically designed for musicians, streamers, and podcasters. These microphones are designed to wow modern creators with not only their looks and feel but also with their sound quality and electroacoustic properties. So, how exactly do the two microphones differ, and what features can content creators benefit from, day in and day out?
Name
Initially, we followed naming conventions used in the engineering industry. The names given to beyerdynamic microphones contained different initials to denote their series and make it clear which applications they should be used for. We wanted to simplify the names of our newest launches even further. As a result, the microphones start with the letter “M”.
With time, extra letters were added to indicate their intended application area. For example, “TG” was Touring Gear, and “MC” was used for Microphone Condenser. Several new launches have been added to this system, like the PRO X microphones, which provide a wide range of creative possibilities. Similarly, the number was added as a distinguishing feature for the DT 770 PRO and DT 990 PRO headphones.
Accessories
Mounts and nuts for both microphones were designed to be interchangeable to ensure mutual compatibility. This way, PRO X microphone users don't have to purchase different accessories to use the M 70 & M 90 models, making it more convenient.
The M 70 & 90 PRO X model studio pop filter is also compatible with other microphones. Compared to a pop shield customised for a specific design, this studio pop filter allows consumers more flexibility. Moreover, the pop filter’s gooseneck enables users to set and maintain the perfect distance between the speaker/singer and the microphone, which is difficult to achieve with a foam windshield cover.
Differences
In addition to having different designs, the two microphones also differ regarding their address type. The M 70 PRO X is a front-address microphone, an address type popular with radio stations and podcasters. The advantage is that it is often easier to position the microphone. It also allows users a better view of their screen or keyboard, which is very useful for streaming, podcasting and gaming.
On the other hand, the M 90 PRO X is a side-address microphone. In this design, the built-in microphone capsule is arranged differently, and the back should remain as open (uncovered) as possible for acoustic reasons. Other than that, the users can freely position the microphone.
This design also allows the microphone to be used at unconventional angles, for example, upside down so that singers have more room to gesticulate or to make it easier to place music stands underneath the microphone. While positioning the microphone, users just have to ensure that they “address” the microphone from the “correct” side, i.e. the side with the “M 90 PRO X” wording and the orange stripe.
Transmission principle
The primary difference between both models is the transmission principle. The transmission principle is how the microphones convert sound. The M 70 PRO X is a dynamic moving-coil microphone and is less receptive to incoming sound. The microphone can sound very dry, especially in rooms with a lot of reverb. Room reverb suppression is a crucial feature for creators, especially podcasters, where room reverb can kill the recording quality. In addition, users can speak very close to the dynamic microphone capsule without running the risk of damaging it. The M 70 PRO X has a proximity feature that also reduces room reverb, and the increase in bass ensures that voices sound “more imposing”.
On the other hand, the M 90 PRO X is a true condenser microphone. The microphone picks up the sound and converts it through a razor-thin plastic diaphragm. As a result of this design, the microphone is extremely sensitive and can pick up even the slightest of sounds, such as room reverb, ventilation fan noise or street noise. However, the frequency response is very balanced compared to dynamic microphones, which results in natural-sounding recordings.
This design makes the M 90 PRO X microphone an excellent choice for dubbing actors, musicians and other creators who record in a studio and require exceptional recording quality.
Summary
Content creators can enhance the audio quality of their content using the M 70 PRO X & M 90 PRO X. Due to the different features, creators can adapt quickly and efficiently to the recording situation. As a result, we hope creators are inspired to explore all the available options and that their efforts in any recording ventures produce the best results possible.
