The Answers To All Your Pro X Questions

After years in the making, the wait is finally over, and we have unveiled four new PRO X products. The new PRO X headphones and microphones combine the latest, cutting-edge audio technology with beyerdynamic’s rich legacy spanning almost 100 years, to help you unleash your creativity - anytime, anywhere. So, what makes the PRO X series so special? Which PRO X product is right for me? Is it a huge upgrade over the DT 770 PRO or the DT 990 PRO? Read this blog to find out!
PRO headphones vs PRO X headphones
The DT 770 PRO and DT 990 PRO headphones were designed for studio applications. They were launched at a time when huge studios, interfaces, and mixing consoles were all the rage. Back then, the kind of mobile recording, producing, mixing, and mastering we’re all used to today was still a distant dream. Removable cables were not needed in large studio environments. Then there’s the issue of different impedances – 32, 80, and 250 ohms, for example. The idea is that the perfect harmony between the sound source and headphones can only be achieved with the optimum impedance for the relevant application. Therefore, many people need to use more than one set of headphones because their equipment is incompatible with different audio devices.
However, such issues are now a thing of the past thanks to the closed-back headphones DT 700 PRO X headphones and the open-back DT 900 PRO X headphones. Our PRO X headphones feature a highly requested removable mini XLR cable, making them more versatile than ever. No more annoying plugging in and out of the amplifiers or interface sockets to switch from recording to production headphones. Simply remove the mini XLR cable from the headphones and plug it into the required PRO X headphones – that’s it! Even cables that are too short or too long are history. Armed with two mini XLR cables measuring 1.8m and 3m, the PRO X headphones ensure nothing to stop your creative juices from flowing, whether in the studio or on the go.
And what’s the most important aspect of any studio headphones? The sound, of course. And here’s what makes the PRO X headphones sound amazing.
The newly developed STELLAR.45 driver
The nerve centre of any set of headphones is the driver. Thanks to the newly developed STELLAR.45 driver, the new PRO X headphones boast unprecedented studio performance. The driver is developed, designed, and produced at our headquarters in Heilbronn and features a powerful neodymium magnet, a three-layer diaphragm, and an extremely lightweight copper-alloy voice coil.
This high-tech voice coil enables excellent electrical conductivity whilst remaining extremely lightweight. As a result, the headphones reproduce tones with extreme precision and clarity – without diaphragm post-oscillation. The coil’s lightweight wire also boasts another advantage: the voice coil is longer than in the classic DT models, meaning that it can fully utilise the generated magnetic flux and move the diaphragm with a greater swing. As such, the PRO X headphones achieve a higher nominal sound pressure level and higher maximum volume. Because of the broader frequency response (now 5 – 40,000 Hz), the sound within the audible range can be reproduced with even greater subtlety and even more details. The newly developed three-layer diaphragm, consisting of an integrated damping layer surrounded by two layers, is made from high-quality PEEK (a material often used in medical and aerospace applications) and is extremely stable and durable. The sound quality is not compromised by extremes in temperature or humidity, meaning that these headphones will deliver excellent audio performance for many years.
Thanks to its low impedance and high efficiency, the STELLAR.45 driver can unleash its full sound on almost any device. The STELLAR.45 sounds amazing whatever the set-up, regardless of whether the user is listening through a smartphone, a notebook, a mixing console, or a high-quality headphone amplifier.
These innovative developments mean that the STELLAR.45 has a broad, natural frequency response, a fast transducer response, and a detailed transient response for reliable, distortion-free sound.
Workmanship
Our classic DT models have always been popular - not just because of their perfect sound but also because of their quality of craftsmanship. The DT 700 PRO X and the DT 900 PRO X are no exceptions. With a commitment to creating something amazing, we made sure the headphones were robust, durable and comfortable. A metal headband, GRP components, robust mini XLR connectors and hard-wearing cables ensure that the new PRO X models can handle even the toughest working environments. The new minimalist design is reminiscent of the classic DT models. Still, it gives the headphones a modern, understated aesthetic, ensuring they look at home in any professional audio setting and studio setup. In-ear comfort is a hallmark of all of our headphones, but we have made a breakthrough that makes wearing them even more comfortable! The robust spring steel headband design ensures that the headphones offer a secure fit. The supple velour ear pads are soft to the touch, as you would expect, and provide ample ventilation. The headband features memory foam which ergonomically adapts to the shape of the wearer’s head and can be replaced if necessary.
Designed in Germany and handcrafted with exceptional materials, our new PRO X headphones offer outstanding quality and workmanship. We care about sustainability, so we've made almost every component of the headphones interchangeable.
DT 700 PRO X vs DT 900 PRO X – Which headphones are right for me?
beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X are closed-back studio headphones for recording & monitoring applications. They boast detailed, punchy and powerful sounds. Thanks to the closed-back design, they block out ambient noise well, allowing you complete immersion in your creative work. The DT 700 PRO X headphones are perfect for almost any situation, whether recording or performing live.
The open-back beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones were developed for mixing & mastering applications. They boast extremely detailed, three-dimensional and transparent sound. The open-back design allows the user to pinpoint the position of the instruments and provides a broad soundstage. The constant ventilation ensures that the user’s ears always stay nice and cool, even during sessions that last for hours – perfect for heavy evenings in the studio or long nights spent gaming.
M 70 PRO X and M 90 PRO X: What are their differences?
The primary difference between the two new M 70 PRO X and M 90 PRO X microphones is their technical operating principle. beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is a dynamic broadcast microphone which ensures optimum sound quality for your streams, podcasts and gaming sessions. The cardioid directional pattern combined with its simple operating mechanism ensures that the M 70 PRO X shines even in extremely challenging acoustics as a streaming or podcasting microphone.
The advantage of a direct voice and recording source is that background noise, such as keyboard noises and room reverb, etc., are avoided by the microphone and don’t affect your recording. Weighing 320 grams, the M 70 PRO X is extremely lightweight and allows you to easily mount it on any stand or microphone arm without dipping its boom. The M 70 PRO X is ideal for achieving a typically powerful broadcast sound.
beyerdynamic M 90 PRO X true condenser microphone is a great all-rounder and achieves exceptional sound quality. It was developed primarily for recording vocals, speech and instruments. The large diaphragm microphone featuring a cardioid directional pattern has a broad recording source, enabling the user to move around in front of it. This is the perfect microphone for clear, rich, detailed sound.
